The musical program is based on the theme, In the Hall of the Mountain King, Edvard Grieg wrote for the Henrik Ibsen play Peer Gynt that tells the story of the downfall and subsequent redemption of a Norwegian peasant anti-hero.

This segment of of the Grieg movement highlights the dream-like fantasy of the entrance of our anti-hero into the troll mountain king’s hall to be betrothed to the king’s daughter. He is faced with one of his many challenges when asked by the troll king: “What is the difference between troll and man?”
